About the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology
Mission and Values
We want to understand cancer from its origins all the way to metastasis and therapeutic response, and to translate that knowledge into advancements for patients and society. Our work is built on four core values – innovation, excellence, collaboration, and impact – reflected in our continuous investment in cutting-edge technology, our high-quality scientific outputs, our pursuit of knowledge and expertise beyond borders, and our development of societal and economic value through our discoveries.
Governance and Structure
Led by Diether Lambrechts, CCB is comprised of 13 research groups working across different areas of expertise in cancer biology, all supported by the center’s central administration unit. Beyond the labs, CCB also has several peer groups representing PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and scientific staff, alongside initiatives dedicated to sustainability and to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Operational Support Team
Counting 15 people, our Operational Support Team covers finance and order processing, budget planning, organization of internal and external events, technical and logistic support. They are the first point of contact for specialized IT-support & website, communication efforts and information about the policies & regulations involving patient samples and laboratory animals. By taking care of essential, daily operations they make sure our researchers can focus on their science.
Scientific Ecosystem
CCB is located in Leuven at the Health Sciences Campus Gasthuisberg, which hosts Belgium’s largest university hospital UZ Leuven. Gasthuisberg brings together medical training, clinical practice, and biomedical research, with more than 200 oncology research groups and more than 1000 researchers and oncologists.
History
In 2017, cancer research groups from two former VIB departments (the Vesalius Research Center and the Center for the Biology of Disease) were merged and CCB was born. One of the departments studied the cancer cell almost exclusively, while the other studied everything surrounding the cancer cell. Nine years after the merger, CCB has adopted an integrated approach to cancer research, and those the two research approaches have now become much more interconnected.
Our People
As a collective of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, scientific staff, technical staff, group leaders, and administrative staff, CCB has grown into an institute of nearly 250 people over the last 10 years.
